Basil Hayden Straight Bourbon Whiskey – 100 cl

Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a premium, high-rye small-batch bourbon produced by the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky. Created in 1992 by legendary Master Distiller Booker Noe, it was designed as an ultra-approachable, light-bodied whiskey specifically engineered to welcome newcomers and Canadian whisky drinkers into the category.

Profile:

• Mash Bill: Consists of 63% corn, 27% rye, and 10% malted barley. This high percentage of rye delivers a distinctively spicy character while remaining balanced.
• Proof: Bottled at exactly 80 proof (40% ABV). This low baseline proof reduces ethanol burn, making it exceptionally easy to sip.
• Age: It carries No Age Statement (NAS). While it originally held an 8-year age statement, it is now "artfully aged" for at least 4 years to meet "straight bourbon" criteria. 

• Aroma: Light and sweet with upfront notes of charred oak, vanilla caramel, dried fruits, and a refreshing hint of peppermint or herbal tea.
• Palate: A thin, gentle mouthfeel. It opens with brown sugar, honey, and vanilla before giving way to a prominent pop of black pepper, baking spices, and citrus zest from the high-rye grain.
• Finish: Short, clean, and quite dry, leaving behind a subtle smoky oak warmth and lingering pepper without a harsh throat burn.

Behold, the ninth batch of Kentucky Owl Bourbon! These expressions are highly sought-after, and just generally very impressive indeed - and the brand has an interesting story behind it, too. Kentucky Owl dates back to 1879, created by Charles Mortimer Dedman, but its production ceased when Prohibition came along.

In 2010, Dixon Dedman revived his great-great-grandfather's whiskey brand, and the Kentucky Owl spread its wings once again!

Tasting Notes: Notes of apple, white grape, cinnamon roll, maple candy, vanilla and rick oak. The taste is of honey, honeysuckle, tea, citrus, caramel and has a pepper spice finish.

Batch #9 has a great complex sweetness of fruit and creamy notes across the front palate, then crawls back to some more significant oak notes in the middle, before the spice of the finish spreads across the back of the palate.

Biting into a freshly peeled Louisiana Satsuma is hard to beat! During the last Satsuma harvest in Louisiana, we started mixing this brilliant citrus juice with our Bayou Rum and the taste was so smooth and refreshing we decided to bottle it!

Kentucky Owl Confiscated is a tribute to the barrels the government seized from the founder's great-great grandfather ahead of Prohibition, never to be seen again. This hotly-anticipated whiskey is a spice-driven expression, so it ought to be great as a postprandial tipple on a chilly evening, we reckon.

Tasting Notes

Notes of gardenia, banana bread, toasty sourdough bread crust, and red apple on the nose. The taste is of graham crackers, citrus, toffee, and muted sweet cinnamon spice, balanced with white grape notes, and a hint of cayenne on the finish.
