Matusalem Rum 23 Gran Reserva – 70 cl

This is Matusalem's premium expression of Solera aged rum, the 23 Gran Reserva. The company was once based in Cuba, but have since moved to the Dominican Republic. They Solera age the majority of their rum to ensure their characteristic flavour remains the same from bottle to bottle. Which is good, because it's rather tasty indeed.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh honey and golden syrup. Crunchy almonds. Cedar wood.
Palate: Creamy and rich, with plenty of fruit joining the sweet, sugary notes.
Finish: Spiced and lasting on the finish.

This is a white rum (with a slight shade of yellow to it) that is aged up to six years, then charcoal filtered to strip the color out. As delicate and delightful a white rum as you’re likely to find, the rum starts off with a heady amount of alcohol, masking sweet notes of coconut and a hint of lemon. The palate is on the sweet side (but not overly so), dosed with coconut, pineapple, and a kick of licorice on the back end. This gives the otherwise fairly straightforward rum a bit of a spicy kick, with just a hint of lime peel lingering on the back end. A clear, sweet rum with a distinct and zippy taste. A light rum distilled in continuous feed colums, this is an excellent rum for cocktails.

Describing itself as 'the rum for bourbon drinkers. Bayou Select is copper pot distilled from Louisiana sugarcane and then aged in the Solera method for up to three years. The result is a creamy rum with a bourbon-esque character, accompanied by notes of cinnamon and maple. The Solera method involves a pyramid of stacked barrels. The oldest liquid is in the bottom layer of barrels, the youngest in the top. When a batch is harvested it is filled solely from some of the bottom layer, and those barrels are then topped up with rum from the layer resting on top of them. This second layer is, in turn, topped up with the contents of the third layer, and so on. This process is a way of naturally blending spirits for consistent taste and quality.

A deep mahogany complexion with a stone fruit, plum and sandalwood on the nose, this complex spirit delivers orange marmalade and dark stone fruit with bursts of black currant and tupelo honey. Rounding out with a long, rich touch of smoke this 6 year old spirit lingers like the early morning mist that can only come from the Delta of Louisiana.

NOSE: Slightly floral mixed with cedar wood, tobacco and dried dark fruit
