Strega is a traditional Italian herbal liqueur, produced since 1860, known for its unique yellow color from saffron and a complex flavor from around 70 herbs and spices. It is 40% alcohol by volume (ABV) and can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, as a digestif, or used in cocktails. The name “Strega” means “witch,” referring to the legend of witches gathering in the liqueur’s town of origin, Benevento. 
 
Key characteristics
  • Ingredients: A blend of approximately 70 herbs and spices from around the world, including mint, juniper, saffron, and cinnamon.
  • Color: The characteristic vibrant yellow color comes from saffron.
  • Flavor profile: A harmonious blend of sweet, herbal, and aromatic notes, with hints of mint and spices.
  • Production: The herbs are ground, macerated, and distilled. The resulting distillate is aged in ash barrels for a long time to allow the aromas to blend before being bottled.
  • Alcohol content: 40% ABV. 
 
How to enjoy
  • Neat or on the rocks: Enjoy the liqueur’s complex flavors on its own.
  • Digestif: It is often served after dinner.
  • Cocktails: Strega can be used as a base or modifier in creative cocktails, often as a substitute for yellow Chartreuse.
